THE KING'S BIRTHDAY.
SPORTS ON THE SNOW. ] On the King's Birthday, in 1902, a sports meeting was hel^ on the Ice. It was announced that the price of admission to- the Floe Football Ground, where the sports would be held, would be as follows: — To members of the Antarctic Athletic Club, free; to the public, one emperor penguin's egg ; children not admitted at any price. The sports commenced at 10 a.m., at noon a royal salute was fir«d from the Discovery, and, after an interval for dinner, the sports were continued in the afternoon. The prizes were distributed in the evening. The events were as follow : — Toboggan slide, on toboggans of competitors' own construction ; sledge dragging, weight 2201 b per man, teams of six men each, distance one mile; putting the weight; tug-of-war; shooting competition, .303 rifle, at 100, 200 and 300 yds. standing, kneeling and lying down respectively ; ski (slope) running ; sledge dragging on ski, weight 2201 b per man, teams of six men each, distance half % mile ; general flat race, on ski, distance two m/iles.
