■~\ SOME SHABP ENCOUNTERS. LONDON, April 4. The Japanese occupied Syonihkon, eighteen males west of Chongju, without opposition, and are pushing on, hoping to expel the Russians from Wiju before the Yalu floods the surrounding territory. The Russian cruiser Jemchug 4 completing her equipment in a Baltic shipyard, suddenly began to sink, and! it was discovered that the pipes in the engine-room, leading from the furnaces to, the sea, had been left open. Treachery is suspected. A " Tirtes" correspondent, alter vkiting one Japanese base, reports that General Kuroki's army have secured dtrategio positions enabling them to force the passage of -fch& Yalu at will, but General KuroEi is waiting the development of the second' mobilisation which is iiow proceeding, before striking decisively. Meanwhile the outposts are constantly in touch along the line of the Chengoheng River. Several sharp, conflicts have occurred, in which honours are equally divided.
