SWIMMING.

— ; cRACES AT LYTTELTON. There way'a fairly larg* gathering of swimmers and spectators at Lyttelton this after-, noon, when the Canterbury Centre held its Half-milo Handicap, for a medal presented by Mr A. Kohn, of Auckland, a vice-president of the New Zealand- Swimming Association. There was an entry of twenty-seven, and seventeen of these faced tho starter. The raco was a most interesting one, and, though there was no neck and neck struggle at the finish, the placed competitors finished well together. During the afternoon two more events .were decided, a 75yds Race, for members of the Lyttelton Club, and an inter-club diving competition. The officials were:— Judges, Messrs A. Kohn,- W. E. D. Btoop and G. Reese ; starters, Messrs C. .Kent and C. Mazey ; check Btarter, Mr F. Hair'; time-keeper, Mr W. Johnston. . The following were the results: — HALF-MILE HANDICAP— H. E. 'Sherwood, 125 sec, 1; A. M. Russell, 120 sec, 2; R. Mortimer, 240 sec, 3 ; G. L. Bull, lOOsec, 4 ; N. Reese, ISOsec, 5. N. M'Dowell lOOsec, M. K. Liiofefield' lOOsec, R. Koskella 12osec, E. E. Gill 130 sec, C. Boyd 130soey L. Merton 130 sec, H. Brinkman 14550 c, C. Bryant 160 sec, S. Cook 160seo, E. Squires 165 sec, C. Anderson 200 sec and C. Wright 2165e0 also Btarted. The race was swum over a course 200 yds long. At the fitst turn Mortimer was leading, with Wright second, and Sherwood, Russell and. Brinkman next, these three having' made up a lot of the handicap. At the half distance, Mortimer led Wright by six yards, with Sherwood tan yards away, and Russell and Brinkman still within striking distance, and Gill some distance away. Three hundred yards from home, Sherwood got to the front, and Russell closed up on Mortimer, Wright having dropped back into fourth place. A hundred* and fifty yards further on Russell displaced Mortimer, Sherwood still leading by ten yards. In the last hundred yards Sherwood increased his pace, and, finishing well, won by 25yds, Russell beating Mortimer by 30yds for second place. Bull finished fourth, some thirty v yards further away, and Reese was the only other to finish. Time — lomin 26seo. 75YDS HANDICAP— First heat: L. Toye, 16sec, 1; E. Meikle, 12seo, 2. R. Burns 9sec and E. Percival lOsec also started. Won by two yards. Time — 60aec. Second heat: J. Toomey, llsec, 1; A. Thompson, 16sec, 2. C. xLoskella scr, D. Bamford 12seo and N. Meikle 13seo also Btarted. Won by a yard. Time — 64sec. Final: J. Toomey, llseo, 1; E. Meikle, 12sec, 2. A. Thompson 16seo and L. Toye 16seo also started. Toye crossed Toomey early in the race, and was disqualified, but went on and finished first. Toomey was poms distance id front of Meikle. Time— s9seo. HIGH DIVE— D. West 1. Eight others completed- .
