The fire was apparently • due to the spontaneous combustion of * . quantity of nitre in the forehold. Tha ' flames spread so rapidly that the pantry- - man, named White, was imprisoned, tiui • was only rescued through a hole cot in thft upper deck just as the. flames scorched hia 1 back. The fire subsided almost as rapidly as it began. The cargo in No. 1 hold was y practically' burnt out. The' amount of damage done is unknown.
