MINING.

WESTLAND NOTES. [Per Press Association.] GREYMOUTH, Sept. 16. The Leviathan dredge h*s been adl© for some time undergoing general repairs. It has a large amouttt of pug where it is now located wit_ very little wash, but: what there iis is very rioh. It was expeclted to get a etart yesterday. ' . . Mr Morris, the 'Waawhero Sluicing and Dredging Company's mine manager, intends placing before the shareholders, _t a, meeting to _c held ait Ohri_b-h_r-_ on Sept. 24, a scheme for opening out the flats on the company's claim at a comparaitively *_i±li_g cos*. The Nekon Greek dredge is working right in the centre of the creek, cutting *he point away _o as to get _» straight face aorosis the claim as it enters the banks of the stream just below the township. It will 'be -a week or _o "before this _l-_ig_t line is made, when the machinery will be able to take a straight cut across from one block to 'the otiher and ifairly -niform and good retuirns will be assured. ... ~- The Notown Creek is expected to run GOoz this week. ■ ' The Leviathan Freehold had no wash-up last week, dihe dredge being engaged ertnoating itself from mud and pug, underneath whioh there was very li.tle wash. It has now got four feet of very promising dirt, which appeajrs to be thickening. Wi'tihin its boundaries there is a very large area of wash that will give handsome retturns. The Mokoia Company is now practically out of debt and in a fair way 'bo return dividends. . The Welcome dredge is dredging olose to a high olifß, where a rich run of gold is expected to be obtained. . The Buller Junction is on improving ground. (A.s it possesses «_ coal-mine of its own, -.hereby securing duel at a very low cost, it can in future be worked at a much lowwr rare than heretofore _nd, should continue to pay regular dividends, r The Pactolus dredge (has been off the nciher run of gold for weeks past. It is taking shallower ground, leaving the deeper and richer wash to be treated by the new and k-ger dredge. The "Midas," aa the latter is named, met with unforeseen difficuJiks with regard to its structure, some parts of which had to 'be strengthened This, however, haa now been completed, and as the dredge got affair ©tart on Saiburday morning a return may be anticipated next Saturday. The .North Beach Oo_ap_ny, being now out of debt, has >a really good prospect before it, and having acquired an additional forty acres •at «. cost -if £300, ipaid-up shares ehould have a long and steady dividend^paying •term ahead. The Koh-i-noor dredge made a start on Friday. Tho [Rockls-nds Beach is getting on. a better description of wash, and the dredge having been greatly improved since it was first coinI pleted, there is good reason for believing that 'the shareholders will ere long begin to reap the reward of their ent_-prise and perseverance. The Shellback ground apparently is nch enough, but exceedingly tight and difficult to work. The dredge, "too, is none too string, and is causing a good deal of trouble. The company is in debt about £1600. but as against this there are calls which the directors are making strenuous efforts to get in. The Maori Cully dredge was found "to be losing a good deal of god, and the directors deoided to stop work and put in a save-all. The wash is very good.
