A SLANDER CASE.
SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGES CLAIMED. [PUR Press Association.] NAPIER, Sept. 16. In the Supreme Court to-day, an action brought by E. Crowley -gainst J. V. Brown, claiming £2000 for alleged slander, was. commenced. The pleadings set forward that the defendant, at a meeting of the Napier Land and Building Society, of which Crowley was secre-tary, made use of ah expression which it is alleged constituted an accusation that the plaintiff had tampered with the funds of the society, and the piainti-- had been injured im credit and reputation by reason of the statement. The defendant, in his pleadings, denies that Words he used at the meeting in question could reasonably be construed into an accusation against Crowley of embezzling, ahd denies that the plaintiff has been injured in credit <__d reputation by any words spoken by the defendant.
