MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.

The opening meeting of the Lyttelton United Band of Hope was held intiheWesleyan Schoolroom on Monday evening, when the. President occupied the chair. There was a. largo attendance of children and friends. The programme consisted of short addresses by the -Rev A. H, TreadweU, and the Rev F. J. Tyler, the newly-appointed Wesleyan minister ; pianoforte solos by Misses Bromley and Francis ; songs by MrsLPitcaithlyr Misses Clark and Radcliffe, and Messrs Ldngman and' Cook; company chorus Jyy six female members, and recitations by Miss Carter and Mr Palmer. An enjoyable meeting was then brought to a close by the chairman pronouncing the Benediction. The following are the officers for the ensuing year:— President, Rev A. H. Treadwell; Vice-Presidents, Mrs Whitly, Rev P. _J. Tyler, and Sergeant-Major J. Webb; becretary Miss Ross ; Treasurer, Mr A. Foster. A strong committee, representing nearly all the churches, was also elected. The annual meeting in connection with, the anniversary of No. 1 No Surrender Ladies' Loyal Orange Lodge, was held m the Orange Hall, Worcester Street, on Thursday evening, the President, Sister Hanna, in the chair. There was a good at^ tendance. Two candidates were proposed for membership, and one for affiliation. After the. Lodge was closedj the membeis and friends spent a very pleasant evening. The Right Worshipful Grand Master, on behalf of No. 1 No Surrender Lodge, presented the secretary, Sister Mitchell, wrtn a very handsome writing-desk, as a, token of the esteem in which she was held, bister Mitchell suitably replied. The President, Sister Hanna, gave a reading, and Miss Hayse a song. Short speeches were delivered by Sister Regan, Bro Ranger, W.G.M., Bro Douglas, P.G.M., Bro White and Bro Sloan. Light refreshments were -handed round, and a very enjoyable evening brought to a close with "God save the A meeting of the coonmilttee of the Canterbury Women's Institute was held on Friday. The Progressive Liberal Association wrote inviting the Institute to appoint two delegates to attend a conference to discuss the elective executive and referendum, and the request was complied with. A letter was received! from 'Mr Ell, At H R calling the Institute's attention to' «* pamphlet he had written, with- the object of reaching the. great body of people who never go to meetings, on the subject of the referendum and initiative. It was resolved that the Institute should thank Mr Ell for his generous efforts on behalf of tho education of the people, and a small yum was voted in aid of the printing of the pamphlet. The report on education, drawn up to summarise the Institute's answers to the questions submitted by the sub-committee of the National Council, was read and adopted, and hope was expressed that ib might be printed. After some further business, the meeting closed. The weekly metmig of the Cambridge Terrace Literary and Debating Society was held on Tuesday night. Mr J. Lomas occupied the chair, and there were about thirty present. Mr Telford gave an able and interesting! ,sketch of the life and career of Edmund^ Burke, statesman, orator, patriot and philanthropist. Complimentary reference was made by several speakers to the efforts of (Mr Telford, and a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation . <
