BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEW BRIGHTON. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the ■New Brighton Borough Council was held last Monday night ; present — His Worship the Mayor (Mr "George Mlntyre) and Councillors Edwards, Winny, Bellamy, Walker, Glanville and Wyatt. Councillor Winny gave notice xuat he would move at the next meeting — " That the Council exercise the powers vested in it under Clause 239 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, by selling or otherwise disposing of such portions of the Esplanade or' other of its streets as it may be considered unnecessary to retain for the purposes of a thoroughfare." ' Notices were received of | the Drainage Board, special 1902 rate of 7-16 d in the £. New Brighton's contribution to the Hospital would be £28 14s, and to charitable aid £24 7s lid*. The Town CJerk reported that rates, etc., to the amount of £5 13s 5d had been paid since last meeting, also that the two new lamps had "been erected' ..&9 ordered, and asking that a' ranger should be appointed to look up unregistered dogs in the district ; he announced ..that the installation of the Mayor would take place on Wednesday, May 14. The report was approved. The Council then went into committee on the estimates, and on resuming, the estimates as amended, were .adopted. It was resolved — "That this Council propose to strike the following rates at a meeting to be holden on May 26, 1902, according to the Rating Act, 1882, and the Amendment Act thereof :— XJ&neral rate Is 4d, drainage* 7d, hospital and charitable aid 2d, South Waimakariri; River Board £d, loon area 6d, total 2s 7£ ; also, a sanitation charge of 12s per annum." Accounts to the amount of £12 12s were passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
