Mr H. Cox and Mr C. Ell, of Halswell, were passengers for Hanmer Springs this morning. Mr C. S. Charter, of England, is at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr Brice and Mr Kilgour arrived in town to-day from Wellington. •Mr H. Buchanan, of Little River, intends to go to England on a holiday visit shortly. Mr J. Taylor, of Papanui, has decided to leave for England by the Athenic. Messrs A. and E. Anderson, of Auckland, arrived in town to-day. Mr and Mrs Baughn were among the passengers who went south by the express train, this morning. There died, at Cashmere, on Wednesday morning, an old Mahommedan named Bezire, who last saw his native land of India before the Mutiny. Sir John Cracroft Wilson brought him over to New Zeaand with several other Hindoos, and he has never been away from Cashmere since. For several years he has lived as a pensioner on a piece of land allowed by Sir J. C. Wil-, son to him and his eldest son for their lifetime. He was over forty, at least, when he came from India, and his age has been variously computed at from ninety-five to one hundred and seven years. He was one of the bullock-drivers who assisted in bringing down stone for the Cathedral, from a quarry on the Port Hills, more than thirty years ago. , Mr W. S. Fisher, the newly-appointed second clerk at the local Magistrate's Court, entered upon his duties this morning at the Police Court. As the results of certain changes in the staff of the Public Trust Office, Mr T. R. Say well, who {has been the chief clerk in Christchurch for some three years past, has been promoted to be District Agent of the Public Trustee at Greymouth, in succession to Mr T. D. Kendall, who is now acting as accountant at- the head office. The Public Trustee has very large landed interests in his charge in Greymouth. Mr SaywelTs district^ is also to include the whole province of Westland. His place in the local office is to be taken by Mr W. MJGowan, the present chief clerk at the Dunedin office, Mr J. E. Allen, who has been for over ten years in the Christchurch office, being promoted to take Mr MTGoWan's place as chief clerk in Dunedin. Mr Purnell, of the head office, Wellington, is to be transferred to Christchurch, to take up Mr Allen's duties. Mr Saywell is under orders to proceed to Greymouth ou Tue# day next, and Mr Allen will leave for Dunedin on May 31. The Revs A. Don and Slade and Dr Hyde arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Rotomahana this morning.
