. ♦—■■ There has certainly been, no lack of novels this year — especially ■during later months. It is interesting .to see in -what light readers !ha-ve re-gamled: them. According to readers of the "Academy," among whom a plebiscite has been, taken, the following were the "twelve best" novels published in 1901 up till ike end of October^ — I. "Kirn." 2. "Sir Bicliiard Cailmady," 3. " SUker Teresa." 4. " Lysbetb," 5. "The Bciiiefacibr&ss." G. " Tristram of Blent." 7. "The Se<rious Wooing.'* 8. " T'ho Right of Way." 9. " The Column." 10. " The 'Crisis." 11. "The Octopus." 12. "•The Eternal City." As a prize 'had been offered to the reader whose selection came nearest the united judgment of the competitors, it must "be remembered that °the popularity of tfhe novels as distinct froim- their 'literary value would be certain to be taken into consideration.
