Major-General Elliott captured twelve Boers in an action with De Wet's rearguard, north of Rsitz. While reconnoitring at Vryheid, a force of 500 Boers charged Colonel Garrett's advanced guard, but were repulsed. During December, thirty British officers and 190 men were killed, 49 officers and 382 men were wounded, 393 deaths occurred from accidents and disease, and 1456 persons were invalided home. 1 In reply to -an inquiry made by General Schalkburgher regarding the terms upon which the Boers could agree to cease fighting, the Boer leaders in Europe- instructed him to accept only complete independence.
