EARTHQUAKES AT CHEVIOT.
+ ANOTHER SEVERE SHOCK. SOME DAMAGE DONE. [From Our Correspondent.] CHEVIOT, Jan. 3. A severe shock was felt at 2.30 o'clock this morning, accompanied! by a loud rum» bling, followed by smaller tremor*, until seven o'clock. No serious damage -was done, but it is reported that some of tsh© new chimneys are cracked. The residents are taking it very quietly. [From Ovb. Special Correspondent.] The heaviest shock experienced here since the memorable one on Nov. 16, was felt at 2.30 this morning, followed by numerous small • ones at short intervals. , Chimneys were cracked, and articles of furniture were shaken off shelves, and people generally were frightened. Heavy booming was heard all night. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. The Postmaster at Cheviot wires that a' violent shock of earthquake' occurred at 2.26 this morning, preceded by tremendous boomings, and followed by eight shocks. . A private message received from Cheviot states that th^ shock this morning was nearly as severe as the one which did so much damage on Nov. 16. Considerable damage was done to ' breakable ygoods in the local stores, and the recenfly erected chimneys have been badly shaken.
