ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA.

NOTES ON YESTERDAY'S PLAY. United Press Association — By Electrio Telegraph — Copyright. (Received Jan. 3, 9.41 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 3. The woinl_4a_-_ recovery of the Australians yesterday is the topic of the hour. The wisdom of Darling, in holding his best batsmen till the last was amply demonstrated. At the conclusion of Wednesday's play, no cricket authority was bold enough to predict -hat the' last five of the team could leave anything but a fairly easy task for the visitors. The debutants in the Test Matches proved themselves worthy of the confidence reposed in them. Witb Hill, Duff defied the English bowling, in spite of change after change. It was a great exhibition of fine, confident batting. The Australians have 'already given •'lie Englishmen a respectable total to obtain before they can claim a victory. The wicket when stumps were drawn was in excellent condition, and with a continuance of fine weather a tough contest ought to ensue. (Received Jan. 3, 10.16 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 3. Acting on the initiative of some members of the Paddington Cricket Club, the mayor of the borough proposes to call a public meeting, to protest against-, the hostile demonstration against Noble, on the Melbourne Ground, over the . selection of the Australian team to play in the second Test Match.
