' The presiding Justices at the Magistrate's Court this morning were no less than fifty minutes late. The Waka-ri Rifles, who took part dn the recent shooting competition "with the Sydenham Rifles, left for home by the express train this morning. It is understood that one of the novelties to be introduced at the New Brighton Gala, will be a sand-building competition for children, a prize being offered for the bestconstructed sand edifice. \ George Styles, of Belmont, was brought before the Wellington Magistrate's Court to-day on a further charge of threatening to ghoo-t his wife, and bound over in sureties to keep ithe peace for six months. There was a small attendance of old age pensioners at the Chamber of Commerce Hall yesterday to receive the January instalment ; 50Z (ss against 557 on Dec. 1) persons attended, and the amount paid out was £707 3s 4d. The children attending the New Brighton . Anglican Sunday School held their annual picnic in the local domain yesterday afternoon, . when abcmb one, ihundred children, together with their parents and friends, were present. Running races and games were, indulged in under the direction of the Rev F. R. Inwood and Mr Miles, and after , partaking of tea the gathering dispersed.. The Dunedin correspondent of this paper telegraphs that at the annual -meeting of the Orange Grand Lodge for the Middle Island it was reported that a deputation had interviewed Viscount Crichton, at Ohristchurch, at the time of the Royal Visit with a request that his father,, the Earl of Erne, the Imperial Grand Majst^r of the Institution, should visit tibe colonies. A reply bad been received stating that the Earl of Erne would visit the colonies iri the near future. At a meeting of t&e New Brighton Gala Committee held' last * evening there Was a full attendance, and Mr L. C. Williams occupied the chair. A mast attractive programme oi sports to be held on the beach ■was drawn up for the -approval' of the General Committee on Tuesday evening. A flower show and baby show will be held on th© pier, and in the evening a promenade competition entertainment will tak© place in the Maori Tea Gardens, When prizes will be given for dancing, singing and other competitions. . It was also decided to invite tih-e members of the Eigihitth Contingent in camp at Aldington to attend the gala, and events on the programme will be specially provided for them. R. Campbell, Waiau). The first prize in the .First-class Handicap Yacht Race at the Lyttelttvn. Regatta has been awarded to Mr C. Brown's Onawe, the second to Mr Laurenson's Fleetwing, *. and the third to Mr A. M'Nab's Zephyr. The Kawhai, which was supposed to have taken first prize, did not, it has been ascertained-, complete the. course. Mr W. A. Day has commenced business as a Land, Estate, Grain, Produce and General Agent in rooms in Messrs Pyne and Co.'s new buildings in Cashel Street.
