SIR HECTOR MACDONALD

CANTERBURY CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. The directors of the Canterbury Caledonian > Society held a meeting on Saturday evening— the president (Mr Pat. Campbell) in the chair — to consider what steps the Society should take to receive their distinguished fellow countryman, Sir Hector Macdonald. The Secretary read letters he had received from the Invercargill and Dunedin . Societies, in reply to inquiries from the Canterbury iSocjety. It was decided— (1) That the' President should dispatch a telegram to the General at the Bluff on Monday, welcoming him to New Zealand on behalf of Canterbury Caledonians ; (2) that the President and four vicepresidents be a committee to make arrangements for meeting him ' on his arrival at • the Christchurch Railway Station; (5) th.^t the Society hold a public conversazione in the Canterbury Hall, when a formal address will be presented, together with a small memento. The conversazione was decided upon instead of any smaller gathering, so as to eWble any of the general public who may. desire' to "join in, to dp so, and so make the gathering a's repre-' sentative as possible. It is intended that the proceeds should be expended ia. s Chri^mas comforts for New Zealand soldier?, still at the front. No doubt the public : will give willing) support, not only with the view of doing honour to the visitor, .but in. assisting the fund. The other Caledonian Societies in Canterbury have been communicated with, and Kaiapoi has al-' ready signified,, its willingness to cooperate in doing honour to the General.
