There was a heavy full of snow on the hillsTjn the southern- side of LytUiton Harbour during lasb night and early this morning. - A heavy thunderstorm passed along the hills from Oxford to Mount Gray at midnight, the lightning being very vivid. This moroicg the hills were seen to be thickly coated with snow. The rain which follows, ed the thunder, fell heavily for some time over the northern district, and to-day tiie weather was showery. The rain, though not. equal to requirements, was exceedingly welcome. The very strong north-west gale that raged yesterday changed in the evening to the south-west, and shortly before midnigVit a sharp fall of rain commenced, accompanied by thunder aicd lightning, and continued at- intervals throughout the nigDt. To-day has been refreshingly cool after t lie baking sunshine of ths week. Most parts of Canterbury were affected by the storm, and a flight fall of snow occurred in the neighbourhood of Ashburjfon. The ruin should be of the verj- greatest benefit ;o the young crops, which, moreover, are not' yet tail enough to suffer from the wind. [From Oub Corresvondekt.} ASHBURTON, Oct. 18. Tho weather is bitterly cold to-day, and occasional showers of hail have fallen. Heavy rain »nd sleet fell 'throughout the night, and this morning snow was lying in sheltered spots. Great damage has been don© to the fruit trees in blossom.
