AN INNOVATION.
TOWLNG BY ELECTIUCirY. Tha hui-sa is' doomed in th? neicflibourhoricl i»f tlie Hirer L«a. A'ery semii the noble animal will be released for ever from the weary toil of barge-tiniwinj;. Airangeiiients are bsing made to lay down ; a pair r>f lines on the 'iowpath ti the liver. Over the lines will soon be running a little vehicle propelled electrically by the overhead trolley system. This vehicle is to take the place of ihorstd in towing ths scores of barges that ply up and dawn the river. The benefits ct the change includes ths undoubted facfc that the barges will travel very much faster, and liorsss will be saved tha wea-ripcnia labour which, they had TO perform iwdor the cAd system. If lift new system proves successful in saving lioth time and mcvisy — and th^re is ever^- reason to tliink that it will — we may expect before many years to ses a complete revolution in the means of tiansit on ths great netv,-ork of canals that connect 'the principal towns, and the water highways will become of greater importance ihaii ever.
