WOOD-CHOPPING CONTEST.
[Peb Pkess AssooiAxtoir.] v . INVERCARGILL, May 2. A chopping match for £50 a side and the championship of ithe oolony, between •H. Mitchell, the present holder, and* J. Orouarke; took place . yesterday afternoon. The conditions were, a' <two : foot ired pine log, any style of cutting. Both competitors ohose'^two slopes, and Orouarke won by about twenty seconds in the remarkably fast time of fouu minutes one second. A large'sum of money changed hands in bets: The gate receipts were handed to the Victoria Home for Friendless girls. The winner, who has won many handicap events during his two years' residence in Souths laind, hails from Tasmania..' ' Mitchell' has #a 'Australian reputation^ having never previously been beaten in a match. - i
