BOARD OF EDUCATION.

. ."/ '« ■: ./": THIS DAY,'- V' '. ■ The North Canterbury Board of Education met this morning ; present— Messrs J.. Rennie- (chairman), T. W. ; Adams, H. W.Peryman, M: Dalziel, D. Bud&v J, Mun-' m ".gs, C. A. 0. Hardy and T. S^ Weston. The Buildings Committee reported that, m connection with the Lyttelton West Committee's application for a- " gocd manners' " chart, a sample- of which the Secretary had procured for inspection; it had been agreed to recommend the Board to obtain quota'tiros for' from two hundred to two hundred and fifty, mounted and varnished, for the purpose of supplying all the schools in the district. In. respect to a renewed application for interior renovation of Yaldhurst school, it had been represented to the committee that the Cleric of. Works^ was fully occupied' at present, but that the matter' ■would receive consideration next year, when the school would probably require painting. The Clarkville Committee had applied for leave to spend £20 of the incidental fund eh a shelter shed, but, in view of the expenditure that would be necessary in grading and shingling around the master's premises, it had been decided that a sum of £10 should not be exceeded. An application for a school at' the Hundalee, Kaikoura, had been postponed for further, particulars. It had been arranged that as many members of the Buildings Committee as'possible should visit the Omihi district at the end of next month, Avith the view of deciding upon the site for the aided school. ■ The report was adopted. The Appointments Committee, imported that the following appointments had been recommended: — Flemington, Mr R. S. Pearson, master; Belfast, Miss-F. Morrow, ' assistant-miste-ess. The following resignations had been accepted: — Mr Shrimpton, assistant-master, East Christchnrch ; Miss K. Newton, mistress, Hinds; Mr G. White, master, Cust; Miss Bishop, assistant-mis-.tress, Riccarton ; Mr. J. M'Nxiir, in charge of Bealey aided schools. ,-.■•, ' The Kaiapoi Committee had renewed its request for Master Doubleday to sit for examination in December, and, should he sue-, ceed in passing, for him to be appointed as a second-year pupil-teacher on a vacancy occurring. The Board was recommended to grant the request, as in all probability there would be one vacancy at the end of the year. Mr Amess's letter; referred by the Board to the Appointments Committee, and asking that Arthur Amess might be allowed to compete for a scholarship, had. been considered. In applying the Board's regulations to the case in question it "was shown that, though the intention was to admit children from other parts of New Zealand, so long as the usual conditions were complied with, they could not be considered sufficiently wide in their scope as to admit children who, during any part of the two years previous to examination, had attended schools outside the colony. This being the case the Board was recommended to inform the applicant that it was prevented from acceding to his request. Correspondence had been- received from the Glentunnel Committee in reference to the arrangements to be made for carrying ■ on the upper department during Mi' Opie's absence. It had been decided that the best course to adopt would be to appoint a mas-' ter, and the Board, was recommended to place Mr Benjamin in charge. The attendance for the last six months not entitling the following schools to the services of the respective mistresses, it had been resolved that the Board must take the usual steps to reduce the staff in each case: — -Annat, Bushside, Coalgate, Elgin and Wakanui main. It had been represented to the Kaiapoi and Lyttelton Committees that, . unless the attendance improvedl," the services of the respective assistant-masters could not be l-etained. The Rakaia South Committee's recommendation of the appointment of Mr G. White as master of that school had been agreed to. In view of the decrease in the attendance at the Bealey part-time school, conpled -with the (expenditure attendant on,, examination, or inspection, ifc had been resolved to recommend the Board to discontinue the grant in. aid^ The report was adopted. The report of the Normal School Committee stated that at the meeting on August 2, the Principal had reported that the elder girls had resumed attendance at the cookery classes held at the School of Domestic Instruction ; that Mr H. Wilson, not having been a pupil- teacher, he (Mr Watkins) could not recommend ■ his admis sion to the Normal School. This report had been adopted. An examination report, from Dr Anderson and Mr Ritchie jointly, had been received on the Normal School, in which it had. been stated that the school continued to be carried on with mucn ability. It had been resolved to express the Board's pleasure at the meritorious nature of the report, and to - direct the Principal to draw attention to the weaknesses disclosed in several of the classes, more especially in grammar and mental arithmetic. Mr Ritchie had reported on the Model School, where, in spite of the break in the continuity of the work, owing j to a change -,of masters, the classes as a. | whole still exhibited pleasing evidence at assiduous and sound preparation.:. These reports had been approved. [t The report was adopted. j A deputation from the Papanni com- 1 mittee attended, and asked the Board to purchase 1£ acres adjoining the present school-grounds. The matter was referred to' the Buildings Committee. The Board went into committee, and, on resuming, it was . reported that ■ the' resolution passed on May 31,. to transfer the banking account to the Bank of New Zealand, had been rescinded. Letters from the Belfast, Hampstead, Christehurcb. West and Horora-ta committees, in reference to committees' banking accounts, and from the National Bank of New Zealand, in reference to the circular sent out by the Board, were received. Letters from the Leithfield, Bromley, Rolleston, Tnrwaid, Doyleston and The Peaks committees, endorsing the suggestions made by the Soufchbridge School Committee with regard to the School Attendance Act, were received. The Christchurch East -committee wrote, applying for sixty rifles for the use of a proposed rifle corps in connection with- the school. The Secretary stated that he had wired ?to Wellington, asking how many rifles would be available for North Canterbury, but had not yet received a reply. The matter was referred to the Buildings Committee. A circular from 'the Education Department, with regard to the uniformity _ of school-books, was referred to the Appointments Committee. The Board then went into committee, and, on resuming, rose.
