THE LINCOLN ROAD.

A conference between representatives of the Sydenham Borough Council and the Eiccarton Road Board was held on Saturday afternoon at the City Council Chambers to discuss the question of watering the Lincoln Road. Messrs J. Deans, Jackson, Hanson and Ellis (clerk), represented tho Road Board, and Councillor Manhire and the Town Clerk represented the Sydenham Borough Council. Councillor Manhire said that the residents in the locality were strongly in favour of watering the road, as the great amount of traffic upon it made it very dusty. Messrs Wood Bros, had kindly fixed a pump to the tank at their mill to fill one water-cart. If the work were to be done every day, as was proposed, it would be necessary to make arrangements to have the water-cart filled more expeditiously, and a cart would have to be kept for the purpose. The lirst cost of making these arrangements would probably be about .£6O or .£7O, and the cost of putting the; water on the road would probably bo about «£.iO per" annum. He hoped thw Board would consent to share with the Council tho cost of these works. On behalf of the Road Board, it was stated that in 189G a canvass had been made of the residents on the Riccarton side of the road to "ascertain whether they would consent to be specially rated for watering the road. The residents there only numbered 'eight, and of these only one was willing td pay the proposed special rate. Tho Board would, if the Council wished, canvass tho ratepayers again on the question, but ns the ratepayers concerned were only a small proportion of the whole,- and other roads, like the Riccarton Road, also required watering, the representatives present could not see their way to recommend the Road Board to pay the expense of watering the road out of its general fund.
