CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, Sept. 14. (Before Mr N. K. Bowdeu, J.P., and Mr W. W. Collins, J.P.) Stealing a Tablecloth. — James Mnc.ro, alias William Burns (on remand) was charged with stealing a tablecloth, valued J2l, the property of R. Westenra, on or about Sept. 9. In reply to the charge, accused said that he had picked up the article when under the influence of liquor. Mr Westenra gave evidence to the effect that he had seen a man resembling the accused on his premises on Sept. 9. Mary Ann Brown, a domestic in the employ of Mr We3tenra, identified the tablecloth as his property. Constable Cox stated that he had met the accused in the street on the evening of Sept. 9. The accused asked to be directed to a second-hand shop, and afterwards offered to sell him the tablecloth for half-a-crown. The table-cloth produced was the one accused had in his possession. The Bench sentenced the accused to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. Stone Throwing.— Jame3 Clifford pleaded not guilty to this charge. After hearing the evidence of W. Fuller, Constable Willis and J. Fuller, the Bench inflicted a fine of 5s and costs. — C. Hill and J. Fletcher were also charged with this offence. The Bench dismissed the case with a caution. Obstructing a Thoroughfare. — C. Wotten. was lined 5s for leaving a handcart in Martin Street.
