LYTTELTON REGATTA.

All the arrangements for Lyttelton , red-letter day are well advanced. Th various sub-committees have been hard s 18 work during the past few days, with th »y result that now very little remains to b bo done. The Flagship Committee has set ou __. in a new direction, and in place of th luncheon in the railway shed, a first-clas afternoon tea is to be provided on boar' ■*•*• the flagship between the hours of 2 and y p.m. This year the committee has im i- ported from America a special lot of fire 0 works for the water display, and on Wednea day evening a trial was made of some o these. The rockets sent up were of a dcci n dedly brilliant and novel description, am il quite up to expectations. The consignmen o by the barque Pcndbseot consists of diamom g chain, boom, electric, meteor, golden cloud ' revolving dragon, Japanese fire fly whistling and mammoth balloon rockets 0 Many innovations have been worked inti c the programme, and, apart from the usua c rowing and sailing races, all of which ari j. well supported and promise plenty of sport _ there are several items of an amusing nature. The boys' canoe sailing race, th* s greasy bo wsprit and the Darktown comp6ti if tion are expected to produce plenty of fun _ t The explosion, too, should be a realh „ excellent sight, and as the old vessel wil be moored close to the reef the view shoulf ' be an admirable one.
