DIOCESAN SYNOD.

AFTERNOON SITTING. The Diocesan Synod resumed its sittings yesterday. The Bishop took his seat at 4 p.m. The Rev Canon Knowles brought down the report of the Cathedral Chapter, which was read. The report included advice from Dr Gerald Harper with regard to the Harper memorial, and stated that Mr C. E. Bovan-Brown had been appointed a lay member of the Chapter, vice Mr J. M. Batham (resigned). The Rev Canon Knowles had occupied the position of Honorary Secretary to the Chapter. The Cathedral Chapter had received from the Church Property Trustees £500 as loan on interest from the Dean and Chapter Estate which was used to defray the debt to the Union Bank. •A second donation of .£32 had been received through Messrs Harman and Stevens from Mrs Elizabeth Watson, of London, towards the Cathedral Fund. The serious illness of the organist and bellringer had increased -the expenditure. Thanks were due to Mr Wells and Miss Ross for assistance in Cathedral services. Scholarships at Christ's College had been awarded to Masters Batham, Archbold, Gill, Tribe and Merton, and an exhibition was awarded to Master Lake on leaving the choir. Master A. Vincent had declined an exhibition. A vacant exhibition had been awarded to Master Hobbs, also an ex choir boy. Mr E. Hollow had been appointed a lay tenor clerk of the Cathedral. Mr H. W. Bishop, in moving that leave should be given to bring in a Bill to amend Financial Regulations (Clause 55), and that the Bill be read a first time, said that the object of the motion was to have a permanent diocesan tariff. He would give further reasons on the second reading. Carried, the second reading to be an order of the day for Monday. Mr H. R. Webb moved — "That a grant be made from the Church Property General Trust- Estate to- the amount required to cover the debt, say £220; on the Book Depot account, providing that any sums received from the sale of books in future shallT)e paid over to the Church Property Trustees." - The motion was seconded bfr Mr G. M'lntyre and carried. The Rev H. I-I. Math ins moved— "That the sum of .£2O from the diocesan education grant for the past year, reservedforthat purpose, together witli any sum that may be available from any education grant for the year 1896-7, be expended in aid of week-day classes for the religious instruction of children under the control of the clergy in State schools." The Rev H. G. Hawkins seconded the motion. In the discussion which followed the Rev E.E. Chambers remarked that 90 per cent of the children attending the Lyttelton State school had for eleven years received religious instruction. The motion was carried. TheßevF. P.Fendall moved— "Thatit be a recommendation to the Church Property Trustees to make a granj; of .£25 from the Bishopric Estate to the associate editor of the New Zealand Church News for editorial expenses." Mr J. E. Blackburne seconded the motion, which was carried. The Rev Canon Knowles moved — "That the Synod confirm the election by the Standing Committee of Mr Helyar Wedderburn Bishop as a Church Property Trustee in the place of Mr J. M. Batham resigned." The motion was seconded by Mr H. D. Andrews and carried.
