NEW BRIGHTON.

[By Te Xurapa.] Spring time, and the people flocking here. Cottages are in great demand, and every available habitation is in use. The recent .warm days have had a markedeffect in temporarily increasing the population. Campers -will also flock along, for theSumner by-laws will not have a bad* effect here. Among the advantages • Brighton has over Sumner are the frequent evening trams to town; the excellent road for biking, and the variety of fresh or salt water swimming. To-morrow (Saturday) the Sailing Club's • season opens. As usual, the fun will begood, and,*as usual, there will be a hearty welcome to visitors. Possibly the Bailing events will be enlivened by natatorial struggles, and the scene at Herring Bay— should the afternoon be fine — will' be' an animated one. The dance fixed for Thursday was postponed for the " Hard Up "boys. To-night-that quaint gathering will be held, and if only half the company invited come along, the muster will bo a big one. Messrs Burgess and • Swarm have an« nounced their candidature for Avon. Soon they will, I hope, enlighten us on matters political and let us know precisely what their ideas are. Troublous . times in the whitebaitera' camp. Cause •. The "jigger" business. Already several " mills " have taken place, and there are signs of hard knocks on the wily whitebaiters' visages. Happily the strife is now over, and fishing proceeds quietly. Our h'ghly popular resident " Bport " and Government officer, Mr E. Sefton, has beenliterally bombarded with corigratulations'relative to his success wifch Kis paient cricket hat. Maybe 1 -'it--^will cbine'J-witb. better grace to • " hang off " for a while % then perhaps the good wishes of hiß numerous friends will be thoroughly safe. Till then . The Methodist BChool children will hold a concert shortly.' Mrs Nichols has had the little ones in steady training for some time past, and when they make their dthut it is sure to be worthy of general Bupport. . Thanks to the energy of the agent of the Lyttelton Times, residents are supplied with their morning paper before seven o'clock, a matter of congratulation both for residents and for the energetic Mr Curtis, who is a particularly early bird. Lucky fellows, bur cricketers ! Messrs R. C. Bishop and Frank Sinclair— two enthusiastic photographers— intend giving an entertainment consisting of views of old and new New Brighton. Mr George Hawker, with his usual generosity, has lent the Beach Hall for the purpose, and the funds of the club should be considerably augmented. Special efforts will be made to boom aquatio sports here during the summer, and Captain Owles and Mr Curtis intend to spare no pains to popularise them. Borough matters hang awry. ... The rea» sons are not apparent to the general public, but the meeting held last week could not be termed a happy one. The exchange of amenities was- sad, but let us hope for a peaceful issue.
