ORIENTAL ENTERTAINMENTS.

At the Temple of Truth last night the Eev Haskett Smith gave one of the most romantic and interesting of his entertainments, an illustrated account of "The Haunted Hills on the Way to Jericho." Beginning at Joppa, the lecturer told, in forcible, picturesque and often humorous lan<mao-e, of the memories, stirring, inspiring or saddening, which gather around these hills' of Palestine, so many of which are associated with some great event of sacred or profane history. He warned his hearers, however, that most of the sites, shown by the native guides as those of such events, were " bogus," and had been manufactured, as it were, to meet the demands of tourists who, having gone to Palestine to see the scenes of the occurrences of which they had read in their Bibles felt aggrieved and defrauded if the places in question were not forthcoming. The lecture was illustrated by many very fine limelight views from photographs. In response to numerous personal and written requests, the Key Haskett Smith has consented to repeat "Constantinople the Sublime, and the Quarrel Between the Armenians and the Turks/t his evening. He has specially delayed his departure for Dunedin to meet the request, and this will be his last appearance here.
