THE TAX ON CONSIGNMENTS.

The following letter has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Taxes, Wellington: — Sir, — Re the taxation of consignments, we, the undersigned importers and manufacturers "of Christchurch, beg to express our approval of the action of the Legislature in imposing a tax upon profits derived from the sale of consignment goods in New Zealand. We consider the absence of such taxation was an injustice to the bona fide importers and' manufacturers by placing them at a disadvantage with, the , owners and receivers of consignments. We also fail to see any valid reason why profits inadein business of this nature should not contribute a fair share towards the revenue of the colony. As large dealers in "drapery, grocery, hardware, furniture, saddlery, boots and. shoes, agricultural implements and general goods, we desire to state that, in our opinion, an equitable way of dealing with the taxation of consignment goods would be to levy the income tax on 10 per cent of the gross sales, or, in other words, tax them at the rate of i per cent on the gross turnover. — We have, &g., Sargood, Son and Ewen, Bing, Harris and Co., Mason* Struthers and Co., Butterworth Bros., Limited, W.
