THE BARQUE COROMANDEL.
' rP£B Press Association."] "WELLINGTON, June 5. The enquiry relative to the submerged barque Cororaandel, -was resumed to-day. Mr Mills, collector of customs, said that he '. did not give a clearance for the barque to leave Westport until he had received a certificate from Captain Bendall and the Harbour Master. The Court adjourned to consider its decision. The Court held that the vessel should never have been permitted to leave. Westport without a proper survey. The examination showed that no steps had been taken to provide fresh water for the boilers of the pumping machinery, the result of which was that one of the boilers broke down, and there was a probability that if the vessel had been blown off the land, tho vessel and all hands would have been lost. Captain Bendall acted imprudently in berthing the vessel without ascertaining the nature of the bottom, as he must have been aware of the nature of the harbour works that wore going on. The Court considered that had he obtained the services of a pilot, he would have found a safe berthing place. As it was, the vessel was moored on the edge of a bank, and as the tide receded it capsized. For this nedect tho Court ordered Captain Bendall to pay the costs of the enquiry.
