THE FUGITIVE DETECTIVE.
I n I Per Press Association, j KIRBY BEFORE THE COURT. SYDNEY, June 4. Very contradictory versions of Kirby's movements are going the rounds. Amongst others it is said that he never recollected going aboard the Talune in the box. and. further, that he had no intention of going to Auckland, but anticipating that the Talune had returned from Newcastle, he went down to secure his portmanteau, and got aboard the Tarawera by mistake. He appeared before the Court to-day, and was remanded for a week. He stated that he had undergone severe mental agony during the past ten days. He left New Zealand with the sole intention of committing suicide on the voyage, and left a message in the box to that effect, but when he was about to. carry out his intention he was i prevented by someone on board. William George Bassett, of Wellington, New Zealand, nephew of Kirby, was arrested to-night on a charge of aiding and abetting the fugitive.
WELLINGTON, June 4 1 The Commissioner of Police has been informed that Kirby has been remanded for a week, and the police authorities of Sydney ask that an officer should be sent over, armed with the necessary papers, to bring the fugitive back.
