3 . • ~~ ' 1 A meeting of the committee of the 5 Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to 1 Animals was held at the City Council Chambers at 2.30 p.ni. to-day ; present— His Worship the Mayor (chairman), MesJ dames Julius, Irving and Embling, Messrs 3 D. Duncan, W. Prudhoe, J. H. Parker, M. 3 Murphy, G. W. Huline and R. Foster 1 (Inspector). The Hon Secretary (Mr Murphy) reported that Mesdames H. D. » Carter and Birch-Brown and Mr Hulme 3 had agreed to act on the, committee. The Inspector reported that during the past month he had visited the usual sales yards. The following cautions had been y given :— Horses 7, poultry I, pigs 1, cattle i 2, total 11. The subscriptions ' received " amounted to .£2 7s. The expenses in conr -nection ' with the annual meeting had amounted to .£lO 10s. There would probably be a deficit of between .£3 and .£4. ' It was decided to have the annual report '" and balance-sheet printed and distributed. " After dealing with some routine business 0 the meeting closed.
' The first almanac was printed in 1460. •
