At a meeting of the Licensing Committee Mr Fell appeared on behalf of a number of temperance people, and objected to the renewal of bottle licenses. The Chairman said that it was clear by the Act of 1893 that holders had a right of renewal, and this had not been taken away by the Act of 1895, in which the word new was given no legal definition, therefore they had to take the common-sense 'meaning. That meant one not previously existing. Therefore they granted the licenses. Renewals were granted in all other cases, but an application for an accommodation license at Wangamoa was refused, there being no power to grant a new license. ° : ■ . TIMARU, June 5. At the annual licensing meeting the Rev W. Gillies strove to get the licenses restricted to ten o'clock, but had only one supporter. All the licenses were renewed DUNEDIN, June 4. By five to four the Tuapeka Licensing Committee regretfully decided that then was no option but to issue bottle licenses.
