OBITUARY.
A very old resident of Lyttelton, in the peisbn of Mr E. Eich, died on Wednesday night at the ripe old age of eighty-two years. The deceased, who was born in Somersetshire, took to the sea at an early age and came out to Sydney sixty-three or sixty-four years ago. He there joined a whaling vessel, and one of his cruises brought him to the New Zealand coast. Over sixty years ago he was at Kapiti Island. Eeturning to England, he shipped on board the barque Ehesylvia for Lyttelton, arriving here in IS6I. He resided at the port from that time until some three or four years ago, when he removed with his married daughter to Christchurch. For eleven or twelve years he sailed with Captain M'Lellan, and had a very extensive knowledge of the history of the coastal trade during the past thirtyfive years. The end came rather suddenly, the deceased having retired as usual on Wednesday evening. Heart disease wa-3 the cause of death. He leaves a son, Mr C. H. Eich, of Lyttelton, and a daughter, Mrs H. Turpin, of Christchurch.
