THE FARMERS AND CHEAP MONET.

We (Waikato Advocate) do not suppose that the farmers are in danger of being hoodwinked by the specious arguments that the Opposition . Press are -so-per-sistently lising as against the Advances to Settlers Act. The avowed object of the Government in bringing down the measure was the reduction of the exorbitant rates of interestcharged in the past upon loans to farmers. That this object has been attained, the class which it was intended to relieve, know perfectly well. So patent, indeed, is it. to everybody that the Act has served its piu'pose that Captain Eussell, when speaking at Auckland, could only make sure of rousing opposition upon that very ground. The Act, he said, speaking to townsfolk, would only. benefit the farmers ! It was intended to benefit the farmers, and though Captain Eussell may endeavour to stir up the old animosity between town and country, he will not, unless we . are greatly mistaken, succeed. A wider knowledge has, we believe) convinced those who live in the large centres of population that their interests are identical with those of. the farmers, and even if this were not so, the fact that the action of the Governlhent has brought down interest all round must be felt beneficially even in the towns. .
