VALEDICTORY.

♦ r At the Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton, vii Tuesday night, a . presentation was made to Captain A. .S. Ewan, late of the. Union Steamship Company, who has just been appointed to the position of | harbourmaster at. Westport. Captain. Ewan has traded out of the port for the past sixteen or seventeen years, and being of -a genial disposition he has made a wide circle of friends. Tho chair was taken'by Mr T. L. Smith, who proposed the health of Captain Ewan, and spoke in eulogistic terms of the high esteem in which he was held at Lyttelton. Captain Ewan was then presented with a handsome silver cigar case, Avhich bore the following, inscription : — "Presented to Captain A. S. Ewan by the shipping interests of Lyttelton, 'June 2, 1896." On the reverse side the monogram of the captain was very tastefully engraved. The toast was. most enthusiastically honoured. . Captain Ewan suitably responded, and remarked that although he had never lived at Lyttelton he had often wished he had taken up his residence there, for he had always been treated with the utmost hospitality by his friends. Their present would serve to remind him of the many pleasant associations he had with the port. The proceedings terminated early, and Captain Ewan proceeded to Wellington hy the Penguin. .
