STRIKING OF THE ORAU.
[Per Press Association."! WELLINGTON, June 4. ! The Ohau, bound from Port Chalmers to I Westport, put in here to-day. The captain reports that when about two miles off the Brothers Lighthouse, at 2.30 this morning, going at full speed, the vessel struck heavily on what is believed to have been a I rock. The pumps were sounded, and although the vessel was not making water, it was determined to put into Wellingtoa instead of going on to Westport. When the steamer was in the Terawhiti rip she was found to be making water, and on examination of the vessel here it was seen that one of the rivets in the forehold had been knocked out. Other damage will not be ascertained till the vessel is taken on to the slip. The captain says he is certain that the steamer did not strike Cook Rock, which is in the vicinity of the spot, and he has an idta that the object was a lar.orfi snacr.
