REFORM OF THE POLICE FORCE.
On the subject of police reorganisation the Wanganui Herald says : — " Several of the officers have long passed * the age of efficiency, and should be replaced by more active men. We helieve one of the present inspectors entered the Irish Constabulary as far back as 1846, and must therefore be at least' seventy years of age, and there are, we believe, others who are little if anything his junior in years. What the country wants is a police force pure and simple, and not a hybrid military-police system, which is neither fit to defend the country by force of arms, 'nor to protect property of its law-abiding inhabitants against the jbhieving propensities of its criminal classes, who levy a heavy tax on industry with impunity. The subject iB one needing urgent attention, and is one which a strong-minded, common-sense man like the Premier should be able to deal with efficiently, if given a free hand."
