PKQT9 SECTION,

At the monthly meeting of this section, held at/ the college last night, «t large quantity of good work of a wide range of ' character waa ehottta. The exhibits ineltfded portraits, groups, landscapes, instantaneous work, iaoohroraatio work, experimental work and lantern slides, plain and coloured. Some of the competition pho- *■-. tographs, notably in the genre subject, " Laziness," showed a considerable amount of originality, as well as of ordinary technical skill. In this subject Mr L. Gottfried came first, with Messrs Jacobson and. Beardsley following. Messrs Beardß- '• ley, Large and Chidgey were placed in the ' order named in the portrait subject, •♦Child's Head/* and in the general group the.fiist, second and third positions were ' secured by Messrs Chidgey and W. C. Hill. In connection with the judging of exhibits, hitherto left solely in the

'hands of Mr Preece, it was resolved— ' "That Mr Preece be empowered, if . necesßary, to call to his aid one or more members of the section." At the I olo«e of the competitions, Mr R. M. Laing showed a number ■of slides illuatra- '■ tive of New Zealand flowering plants. Many of the slides were ■ coloared, and together with Mr Laing's description of the many peculiarities and beauties of New Zealand flora, proved highly inter- j eating. A number of other elides were exhibited by Mr W. Burke, mainly by way of showing results obtained from sample, plates presented to the section by the Barnetfc Plate Company.
