Local & General.

Eangiosa Litebaby Institute. — The annual meeting of members of the above Institute was to have been held last eight, but owing to thera being leas than a dozen present, it was decided to adjourn fora fortnight.

Swannanoa.— -Last night the Rev P. B. Monro lecture J on "Scottish; Wit and Humor" at tbe Wesleyan Church, Swannanoa, in aid of the church fund. There was a good attendance, and the Eev 8. J. Gsrlick took the chair. Mrs T. G. Smith Bang two Scotch aongs. At the close of the lecture, refreshments were handed round.

St John's^ Lyttelton.— The weekly meeting of the Literarjr Society in connection with St John's Presbyterian Church was held list night. There was an attendance oF sixty members, and Mr E. Hatchwell occupied the ohair. Songs were sung by Messrs Whyte and Badcliff c, and a dnec by the Mis3es Milsom. The Rev P. W. Faiecloiagh delivered a lecture on "The Greatest Human Invention;"

City Council Election.'— The election, of a councillor to represent; the South-eaßt Ward on the City Council, in place of Mr E. Smith, who resigned his seat, is taking place to-day at St John's fchoolroom. The candidates are Messrs A. Ayers, W. Woods and W. I. Ballinger. Very little interest has been taken in the election. The result of the poll will nob ba known till about 7.30 p.m.

Ohubch Guild.— Last evening, a meeting of members of the Eaiapoi Church of England Guild was held in the Sunday schoolroom. There was only a moderate attendance. Mr Papprill, in the absence of the Rev H. H. Matbias, presided. This being the journal ovening, the editor, Miss Wilson, read a number of papers on variouß subjects. They were all well debated, and some of them afforded great amusement.

Sydsnham Poultry Show.— -The annual poultry show in connection with the Sydenbam Poultry Society was opened in the Mission Hall, Colombo Street, Sydenhain, this afternoon. Tco entries numbered over five hundred, and the quality of the exhibits in the poultry, pigeon and canary classes was very good. The show will be open till ten o'clock this evening, and will remain open from. 9 a.m. till 9 p.m. tomorrow.

, Football " Social." — Last Thursday evening Mr W. J. Moir, was entertained at a "social" by the footballers of Kaiapoi on his leaving the district. The gathering was held in the drill hall, and about seventy were present. The hall was decorated, and dancing was continued till early in the morning, the, music was supplied by Mr Bennett, and Miss Ellen piano and Mr Hoskins cornet. Songs, &c, were interspersed during the evening. The Mayor referred to the loss athletic circles would sustain, and the guest of the evening replied. Mr D. Brown was the caterer.

Personal.— Mr S. Mathews, for many years light- weight champion of the Pacific Slope at wrestling, arrived in Christchurch this morning from Wellington, where -he is managing a large gymnastic club, which has as members many leading citizens. It is Mr Mathews' intention to establish a similar club in Christchurch, and his present visit is partly with that idea in view, and partly for the purpose of giving an athletic entertainment that will include boxing, wrestling, club-swinging, weight-lifting and fencing, the performers being athletes known throughout the colonies. 11

Dissolution Sale, — The sale of glassware, china, &c, now being held by John Bates and Co., Cashei Street, and Du,nford and Co., Colombo Street, in consequence o£ dissolution of partnership, will be continued for a few days longer. An advertisement appears on the first page of this issue. 9923

Thb Unemployed. — His Worship the Mayor of Chriatchurch has requested the Mayors of the suburban boroughs, and the Chairmen of the Road Boards adjacent to Chtiatohurch, to meet him at the City Council Chambers at 8 p.m. to-day to consider the question of united action in dealing with the unemployed question. He ie in hopes that a scheme will be formulated for satisfactorily meeting the difficulty this winter.

The Homeward Mail. — Bepreßentations of colonial scenes are always welcome to frienda at Home, and these are supplied in variety and number in this week's Canterbury Times, the illustrations in which include a portrait of the late Mr A. J. White, views of the Easter flood in the North Island, portraits of two of the Wellington Bowing Club's crews, and illustrations of one of tho leading Christchurch business establishments. The reading matter ia of the usual comprehensive charaoter and high quality, and there can be no better means of keeping distant friends informed of the progress of the colonies than by sending them a copy of this most popular weekly. An edition is published this morning specially for the San Francisco mail, which closes this evening.
