Shorthand Writers' Association. — An interesting lecture on "Shorthand, Ancient and Modern" was given by Mr E. J. Luah, at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association, on Saturday evening. There was a largo attendance of members and their friends. The lecturer referred to the great antiquity of shorthand, which was kaown and practised by many of the old civilisations. In the Middle Ages shorthand was pronounced a j black art, and its books and manuscripts burnt, but with the revival of learning transcribers and others turned their attention to the recovery of the then loßt art of verbatim reporting. The lecturer contended that after many failures and partial successes, the nineteenth century could claim to have mastered the problem by its present development of Pitman's Phonography. Mr Lush was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address, and the meeting closed with the übubl vote of thanks to the Chairmau, Mr A. G. Ashby. The South-bast Ward.— The Return iDgofficer, Mr H.
