SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

. The monthly meeting of the St Albans School 'Committee was held at the main school on Wednesday ; preaent— Messrs A'Court' (chairman), Allan, Glass, Palmer, Simpson and Williams. An apology for absence was received from Mr Wake. Reports from both schools were read. The average attendance at the main school was considered far from satisfaotory. Letters were received from the Addington School Committee with regard to scholarships, and from the Board of Education giving notice of the re-appointment of Mr T. Chambers. The tender of Mr W. White for -the supply of fuel was accepted. Messrs A'CoUrt, Allen and Palmer were appointed a Bath Committee, and Messrs Glass, Simpson and Williams a Works Committee. '

An ordinary meeting of the Opawa School. Committee was held on Monday evening; present — Messrs Scott (chairman), Mitchell, Bray, Wood, Favitt and Ellißon. Mr Morrison sent an apology for absence. The head-master's report showed the average attendance' for the past month to have been 174. It wss resolved to take action in a case of non-attendance. A .circular was read from the Progressive Liberal Association with regard to the eleotion of the Board oi Governors of Canterbury College. The Committee was injfavour of the proposal that the Board should consist of six members to be elected *by the householders resident .within five miles of Christchurch, six by the College graduates, and twelve by the Canterbury School Committees. Arrangements were made for the coming concert, ahd accounts to ihe amount of £1 10s were passed for .payment. A month's leave of absence was granted to Miss Annie Ritchie upon a doctors certificate.

The monthly meeting of the Kirwee Bchool .Committee was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening; presentMessrs .Lawry .(chairman), Anderson, Firth and M'lntosh. The. master's report showed the number on the roll to be fiftyfive, the average attendance forty-three, and the highest attendance fifty-one. In reply to a letter from the Canterbury Progressive £iibeial Association, it waß unanimously resolved to support the election of members of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College beine: in the hands of the householders of the Provincial District of Canterbury. It was resolved to call for tenders for a swimming bath for the use of the school children, the sanction of the Board having been given. Accounts were passed for. payment. The Chairman was authorised to carry out some necessary repairs, .and a cub-committee was appointed to arrange swimming bath details.

A meeting of the South Eakaia Sohool -Committee was held on Monday evening, all the members being present.' The Board acknowledged receipt of two resolutions passed at the annual meeting on the subject of new schools, and stated that the matter, could not be eohsidered till the next Government appropriation for buildings was; arranged. The inspector's interim report .on the school and the master's remarks were considered satisfactory. The inspector's remarks regarding' the state of the "buildings were unanimously endorsed. It was resolved to give winter holidays from June 21 to July 8. The Chairman was /authorised to request the Board to provide a large filter for use in the school.

The usual monthly meeting of the Papanui School Committee was held on Monday evening; present— Messrs .Jones (chairman), Buntin, Were, Prichard, Derritt, Hudson and Thompson. An apology was received from Mr W. Gifkins. Correspondence was received from the Education Board appointing Mi'sb Adele' Hodgson as temporary teacher in place of Mr Boyce, promoted. The headmaster's report showed that the average attendance was 222 for the past month. He requested to have the chimney in the sitting-room put in order, to have, a boiler Bet in the washhouse, and recommended that certain books should be obtained for reading in Standards I. and 11. It was resolved that the Works Committee should see to the fireplace and boiler, and that the Visiting Committeein conjunction with the head-master should obtain the reading books required, and also a model for showing the motion of the earth. It was deoided that the Works Committee should ascertain the cost of tan for the gymnasium and report next month. Accounts to the amount of £2 13s 6d were passed for payment. The oiroular from the Progressive Liberal Association, relative to the appointment of the governors of Canterbury College, was considered, and the following resolution was carried— " That it is beyond the province of this committee to interfere, no matter what our individual opinions may be." The seoretary waa instructed to obtain absentee forms from the Education Board, and the proceedings terminated.

. An adjourned meeting of householders took place at the Bromley school on Monday evening, when there \ was a good attendance, and considerable interest waa shown in the affairs of the sohool. The Chairman of the out-going committee (Mr Andrews) stated that there was a oredit balance of JES 14s 3d*, in other respeots his report was not so favourable, the attendance in particular being unsatisfactory. The following committee was elected:— Mrs Wise (in the chair), Mr Andrews (secretary and treasurer) Messrs Early, Berry, Ashton, Muir, and M'Kenna. The monthly meeting of the Lyttelton committee was held on Monday evening; present— The Revs P. W. Fairolougb, C. Coates and A. Treadwell, Messrs Radcliffe (chairman), Webb, Laurenson, Brice, Field and Wilcox. The attendance was shown as still being irregular, owing to the prevalence of sickness in the town. The nnsnitablenesß of the Colonists' Hall as a classroom was also detrimental. The average for the past four weeks was Bhown as 632, and ths highest attendance on any one day as 659. It was decided to. Btart the usual winter popular concerts for the purpose of raising a fund for the purchase of a piano, to assist in the instruction of the ohildren in music Messrs Radcliff<*. Willcox, Laurenson and Field were appointed a subcommittee to carry out the necessary arrangements.
