OBITUARY.
I A. J. WHITE, Agsd 58. Early this morning one of the best ' known business men in Christch-u'fcb '• passed away in the person of Mr A. J.* i White, who died at his residence, Crompton, Opawa y after a somewhat protracted illness. The deceased was born in Taunton, Somerset. England, in 1838, and for Some yeara carried on business as a currier m his native town. He came to Lyttelton in the ship Zealandia in 1861, and in 1863 embarked in business in Chriatchurch in a very small way in Higfe Street. He took an active J interest in the education of the children of tfcr colony. To every good work connected with hia c'dtuch he was a beneficent" donor, and he closely identified himself *ith everything? connected with religious undertakings, contributing in nof small degree to the success of the Mount Magdala Asylum and ether Catholic insti- t tutions. Mr White had been ailing for the* paßt eighte?n months, and ' about foar months ago he had made ' arrangements to go Home for medical j advice, but his illness beaame so serious that he waa unable to do s&. Since that . time he has been confined So his honse. i He was attended throughout hia illness i during which he suffered acutely, by the ! -Bey Father Ct.mmii.ge, Vicar-General of j Christchurch. He leaves a wife, Beven i daughters and one son (Mr A. 3. White) to mourn their loss. A devout Catholic and , a good citizen, he will be greatly missed, not only by the frequenters of the Pro- ; Cathedral, but by the residents'- of Christ- ; church generally. I j On Monday at 10.30 a.m. there will be a . special requiem mass at tho Pro-Cathedral. j The body will remain in the church nntil i j the afternoon, when the funeral will leave I i £? r l^ Q I*i aw °od cemetery.
