PALMERSTON NOBTH, June 7.
At the District Court A. F. Laurenson was admitted to probation for six months on the charge of failing to keep proper books to show his financial position, and was ordered to pay costs £25. George Storey, charged with opening a lotter, was admitted to probation for twelve months, and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution and find one surety for £100.
WELLINGTON, June 7.
A case was heard in the Stipendiary Magistrate's Court in which a firm of timber merchants sued one of their late employe's for goods, amounting in value to £20 3a 9d, the claim being reduced to £6 14s 9d, after allowing a set-off, chiefly composed of deductions from wages, amounting to £22 9s. Counsel for the defendant submitted tbat the plaintiffs must be nonsuited, as the claim was in contravention of Clause 7 of the Truck Act, 1891. Mr Martin upheld this contention, and nonsuited the plaintiffs. Two men were charged to-day with illegally taking fish in the Wainni Biver, by shooting them with guns, and were fined £5 each and costß 265.
NELSON, June 7.
AU licenses were renewed yeaterday, with the exception of tbe application for a transfer of the Exchange Hotel to Samuel Hansen, which was deferred until July 4, to which date the committee adjourned. The objection was, undesirable characters frequenting the houße.
