Road Boards. SPRINGS.

The first monthly meeting of the new Board was held on May 28; present—Messrs Pannett, Marshall, Quayle, Geddis and Wolfe. Mr Wolfe was elected chairman of the Board. The Waimakariri Eiver Board, forwarded a copy of a special order to levy a rate of one-sixteenth of a penny in the pound on land in Class 1., and three-sixty- fourths of a penny in the pound on land in Clasß 11., on all land comprised within the Waimakariri Eiver Board district. It waa decided that the rate should be levied and collected with the Board's general rate. Mr W. H. Mont* gomery, M.H.8., forwarded the reply received from the Minister of Lands with reference to the Board's application for ; Government assistance in roading the Lake land, to the effect that no funds were available fqr the purpose. The Board decided to make a further application at the next session of Parliament. A deputation was appointed to report on the drainage of the Lincoln township. The Overseer's report i was read, and the Clerk was instructed to have a quantity of poisoned wheat prepared for distribution among the ratepayers. A ballot was taken in order to decide which two members shoald retire first, the lots falling to Messrs Pannett and Wolfe. It was resolved to pay 9s per day for a two-horse team and 7a for single. The financial report. was read, showing the receipts for the past month to have been £39 3s 3d from all sources. The credit balance at the Bank of New Zealand was £390 7s 6d. Acconntß amounting to £138 14s 9d were passed^or. payment.

Working Men's Club. — A. cribbage match, thirteen a side, took place between teams representing the Christchurch and Sydenham Working Men's Cluba in the social hall of the former on Saturday night. After a well-contested match the Christchuroh Clnb won by forty-five games to thirty-seven. After the conclusion o! play the visitors were entertained at a amoke conoert. The chair was occupied by Mr Martin, president of tha Chriatchursh Club, who was supported by Mr Hawley, president of the Sydenham Club. The healths of the two teams sad other toasts were drank, and reference was made to the good feeling and other happy resultß which had arisen from the affiliation of the clubs. Several good songs were sung by members and' visitor?, and a very enjoyable time was spent. It is expected that a return match will shortly'be played at the Sydenham Working Men's Club. Sunday Lkctoke. — "What Morality has done for Belief and what Belief has done for Morality" was the subject of the lecture in the Lycoutn Jast -night by Mr W. W. Collinß, at which there was a very good attendance.
