WORE AND WAGES.

The Mayor of Chriatchurch has received the following telegram from the Hon W. P. Beeveß :— " I hope to be able to have about forty men taken on from Christchurch during the next fortnight, and as many from Dunedin. The speedy purchase of Canterbury lands depends on the Land Purchase Board. They have just agreed to recommend several properties, I believe."

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council waß held in Inglis's Buildings on Saturday. Correspondence was received and dealt with :— From Wellington Trades and Labour Council, regarding a labour paper. It was decided to defer consideration of the matter for three months, in order to allow the Unions time to discuss the question. The Council decided to pay its share towards printing, in pamphlet form, the proceedings of the conference. From the Dunedin Assembly of the Knights of Labour, asking for the support or the Council to a labour paper about to be established by that body. It was resolved that as the Council had already pledged itself it could not accede to the request. Correspondence was also received from the Jubilee Pioneer Knighta of Labour, Auckland, regarding rating on unimproved land values, and was endorsed. The question of an old age pension scheme, as proposed by the Progressive Liberal Association, waß next considered. It was reßolved— " That this Council appreciates the efforts put forth by the Association, and is in sympathy with the principle of an old age pension."
