The two latter were waiting on each other, and allowed Keil to steal a march, and he won easily. Lewis, of New South Wales, who won the firat heat, waa disqualified for interfering with Keil. Time— 2min 34jsec. OBITUARY. The death of Dr Dobson, M.L.C., brother of the Chief Justice of Tasmania, ia announced. THE VICTORIAN TARIFF. A manifesto has-been issued by the Protection Association and representatives of the industries affected, protesting against many of the recommendations of the Tariff Commission. It was also decided to prepare schedules of recommendations and objections, and that these Bhould be for* warded to all members. of the Legislative Assembly, aa the tariff of each trade cornea before Parliament. OBITUARY. MELBOURNE, June 3. Violet Varley (Mrs J. Tapley), the wellknown actress, died in childbirth. BANK DEPOSITS RELEASED. BRISBANE, Junb 3. The Permanent Building and Banking Company has released a second instalment; of; deposits, although they do not mature until May, 1896. HEW HEBRIDES MISSION. SYDNEY, Juke 3. The New Hebrides Synod has resolved that seeing that the matter of obtaining a mission steamer haß been taken oat of its hands by the action of the Victorian foreign Missions Committee, and as the suitably of the vessel is not assured, it will leave the matter for the present in the lands of Victoria, to do its best in the interests of all concerned. The Revs Lamb and Watfc, of New Zealand, and the Revs Robertson and M'Donald, of Canada, iisseuted from the resolution.
