GALVANI, SMITH & CO.'S NEW INVENTION.

(Continued.) 'The patent consists in making the instrument bo that, close up, you get all thenotes previously mentioned in the old firat position, the B flat or open note of the ordinary trombone. Mr Bird supplies a diagram showing the superiority of the "Virtuoso" as compared with Wallis's and others, and continues : — "In Wallis's or other trombones at the B flat position are stops, which prevent the slide going up further. In Stilvani and Smith's new instrument there are no stops, and the additional space up which the slide moves gives, when the elide is closed up, these extra notes." . The stops are the places where the Blido Btops on on being moved up, and Mr Bird says that " S. and S.'a " slide moveß up further to the mouthpiece than in other trombones, and also says : " Take my honest opinion, the instrument is the finest of the sort in New Zealand, und if a fellow wants to do anything on a trombone this is the kind to do it with." The diagrams supplied are illustrative of the advantages derived from the improved trombone, and Mr Bird, or tbe secretary to _ the Association, Mr R. M'Lellan, cf 'Dunedin, will gladly supply anyone with information. The instrument was won afc the contest held in Christchurch in 1893, and though owing to some misunderstanding there was considerable delay, to judge by the tenor of Mr Bird's letter, he is more than recompensed for the exercise of his patience, and will have the consolation of knowing that he possesses the boss trombone in tho colony.
