BOARD OF EDUCATION.

THIB DAY. A meeting of the North Canterbury Board of Education was held this morning: ; present — Messrs B. Westenra (chairman), A. Saunders, T. W. Adams, J. Sennie, H. W. Peryman, J. Mannings, J. W. Sawle and B. Meredith. Ad apology for abßenoe w»b reoeived from the Hon W, Montgomery. i BUILDINGS OOMMITTKB. The Buildings Committee reported that some small items had been allowed for repairs, &c, at various schools, and the Clerk of Works had been direoted to report on a number of applications. It nad been resolved that there was no objection to the Kirwee Committee forming a swimming bath aa proposed. A letter had been received from the department, inquiring what was the cause of the condition that necessitated the Board's application for assistance in the form of an advance on account of the buildings grant. It had been resolved to reply that the Board was put to heavy expense in re* roofing with iron " many school buildings, the old shingle roofs of which were in a state altogether beyond repair ; that the coat of the schools requited at Cheviot had amounted to considerably more than double the sum specially allowed by the Government; and that while the financial year began with the month of April, the buildings grant was not distributed till October or November. In these circumstances some anticipation of the grant became a matter of necessity. The following tenders had been aocepted : — Flaxton, repairs, Boyd and Keir, J853 j Weßt Eyreton, repairs, J. Forbes, £44 9s t Broadfield, repairs, S. Packer, £48 18s » Greenatreet, repairs, Smith and Son, £20 15s } Tinwald, repairs, Brown and M'Donald, £14 6s; Barry's Bay, repairs, J. Archibald, £34 5b 6d ; French Farm, repairs, J. Archibald, £27 14a 6d. The tender of Mr Wheeler, for lease of the reserve at Babbit Island, was accepted, on condition that he agreed to the Board's resuming two acres if a Bite should be wanted for a school. Mr Sauuders said the committee had fallen into a bad practice of asking School Committees to bear a portion of the costs of repairs. '

The report waa adopted. APPOINTMENTS COHMITTK.

The Appointments Committee reported tlmt meetings had been held on May 30 and May 27. The following appointments were recommended :— Barr Hill— Mrs Sayere, mistress, sole charge. Charing Croßs — Mra Sheldon, sewing mistress. Ohristchurch Weat — On the recommendation of the School Committee, it had been resolved to promote Miss Edkins to the position vacated by Miss M'Gregor and Miss Margaret Morrison to that of Mies Edkins, and to advertise for an assistant mistress for the position now held by Mibs Mormon. Duvauchelle's Bay— Leave of absence, on account of illness, had been given to Mr Bruce. Courtenay— The committee had applied for the appointment of a master. It had been resolved that the regulation mast be complied with, according to which, the school had to be in charge of a mistress. Spotawood — A. letter had been Teceived from a resident at Spotawood. aaking that the school might remain on its present footing till the teacher could sit for his certificate. It had been resolved that the request could not be complied with. Pendarves — The committee reported that as only three children attended when the BChoolwas, re-opened, they had decided ou closing it. till the spring. Prow b&iionara— Upon reports from the inspectors and the respective headmasters, the engagements of the following probationers had been confirmed :— Christchurch East— Amelia Hudson, Elizabeth Bteede, Irene Hare, Emily Lake, Ellen M'Bae, Emily Gfbbs, Guy Ormandy; Christohurch West— George Jupp, Eose Smith, Sarah M' Gorman, Fanny Schneider; Sydenham — Jessie Pioken, Elizabeth Bteelei Lyttelton— Nellie Curtes, Maud O'Brien ; Weßt Lyttolfcon— Lilian Newton ; St Albans— Thomas Chambers j Wooltton — Lucy Manifold, Christina M'Neillj Alford Forest — Herbert Gillman ; Harewood Road— Evelyn Wilkinson ; Lakeside —Elizabeth Noble; Loburn — Louiaa Brady. Reports — Examination reports had been received from Mr Wood on Little Akaloa main and side, Gebbie's ' Valley, Little River main andaide.Onuku.Robinson'aßay, German Bay side, Duvauchelle'a Bay, Barry's Bay, French Farm and Wavnui, From Mr Bitohie on Port Levy, Pigeon Bay main and side, Akaroa, German Bay main. Okain's Bay, La Bon's Bay, and the aided echool at Goagh's Bay. At the meeting on May 27 the following appointments were recommended :— Addmgton, Miss M. Shirtcliffe, infant mistress; Courtenay, Miso A. Bhailef, mistress (sole charge). Sedgemere— The resignation of Mr A. Johnson, who had been appointed first assistant of the central school, New Plymouth, was reoeived and accepted. Lakeßide— Oa the application of the committee they had been authorised to employ Miss E. Noble as sewing mistresß for three months, in place of Mrs Hicks, who was for the time unable to attend to her duties. Bicoarton — An application had been received with re»peot to Mrs Wilkinson's leave of absence. It was resolved that the leave granted must be on the usual terms, viz., one month on full pay and a Becond month on half-pay. Applications —Applications for appointment as master at Broadfield, mistress at Mackenzie town, and mistress in sole oharge at Spots wood and Domett had been reoeived and oonsidered. Beports— An examination report had been reoeived from Dr Anderson on Waitohi school ; and inspection reports from Dr Anderson on Heathcote Valley, Springston, Irwell, Brookside, Killinchy, Sputhbridge, Leeston, Lakeside, Bakaia Little, Sedgemere, Leithfield, Waikarif and . from Mr Bitohie oosn s Darfield, Kimberley, Glentunnel (main and side), South Malvern and Hororata. The report was adopted. NOBHAL SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Normal School Committee reported that Mr Adams had been elected chairman of the committee. The Secretary reported that the sum of .£3OO had been paid by the Government to the Board's account, being a gr»us for the training of teachers. Tenders for the supply of fuel for the ensuing year had been received, and the tender of Messrs White and Co. at £1 8s Ed per ton Newcastle coal, and 30s per cord cut firewood, had been aooepted. The report was adopted. MARSHLANDS COMMITTEE. A deputation attended to protest against the manner in which the Marshlands School Committee election had been conducted. After hearing the deputation and con* aidering a statement which had been forwarded, the Board decided that the election was invalid. NEW SCHOOLS. Mr Meredith moved, pursuant to notice — " That the Board make out a list of cases of urgent necessity tor the erection of new schools and extensive repairs, with an estimate of the probable cost of same, and to be forwarded to the Minister of Education, with the request that the requisite amount be granted by the Gbvern- ! ment, in anticipation of the next Parliamentary allocation for the ereotion of school buildings." He stated that there was urgent necessity for the ereotion of schools at Port Bobinson, St James's (Hanmer Plains), Overdale, Bakaia suburbs and Babbit Island. In addition to this there were numerous applications for teachera' residences and repairs. Mr Sawle seconded the motion, and referred to the wants of the Chertsey district, and also the crowded state of the Ashburton school.

At the request of Mr Peryman, the secretary read the letter which had been received from tbe Minister of Education. Mr Saunders suggested that a committee should be appointed to reply to the letter, and point out to the Minister the number of children without school accommodation. Messrs Adams and Mannings supported the resolution.

The said that he thought that a strong reply should be sent to the letter from the Minister of Eduoation. The motion was then put and carried. Messrs Saunders and Peryman and the Chairman were appointed a committee to

d-aft a reply to be sent to the Minister of Education. CHAIRS FOR TEACHERS. Mr Sawle moved, according to notice— ■" That female teachers in all schools under the Board be supplied with high chairs. Mr.Peryman seconded the motion, but suggested that information should be obtained as to the number of chairs necessary. Mr Adamß moved as an amendment — "That on it becoming necessary to supply any school with new chair or chairs an ordinary or high chair be sent as the local committee may recommend." Mr Meredith seconded the amendment. After some discussion the original resolution was withdrawn, and the amendment was carried. NAME approved. The Board approved of the name Huntingdon as the name for the Graham's Eoad Distriot. KAIAPOI COMMITTEE. The Chairman of the Kaiapoi School Committee wrote forwarding the following resolutions, which had been passed ac a recent meeting :— "(1) That this committee's responsibility in connection with the accounts dates only from its election on April 23, 1895 (vide a meeting of the Board regarding Fernside school on May 8); (2) That this committee has no funds available from which it can refund the .625 paid for piano. (3) That this committee respectfully submits that the Board would have no legal right to deduct the sum bf .£25 from the incidental grant, and points out that wero this action taken it would be a great hardship upon the children attending tbe Bchool, as it would necessitate tbe stoppage ' of the usual , supply of coals in the winter weather; ■ (4) That there is nothing in the minutes of the committee showing the names of any of the committee as responsible for the ' vote to authorise the purchase, also that some who were then on the committee are now dead and others have left, also that the purohase of the piano was made in good faith, and that the Board did not supply the committee with a printed circular stating what tbe incidental funds could be spent on until after the piano bad been obtained some months; that the instrument was purchased for the better teaching of music to the pupils, in the place of one that bad been lent; also that the piano comes under the head of school farnitnre." After discussion, it was decided to refer the matter to the Board's solicitors for advice. NOTICEB OF MOTION. Mr Meredith gave notice to move : — " That tbe purposes for which the incidental allowances to schools are now made be revi.ed by the Buildings Committee and submitted to the Board." Mr Bennie gave notice to move :— "That this Board recommends that the teachers discontinue the practice of pieparing the children for school concerts during school hours." The Board then adjourned till two o'clock. The Board met at 2 p.m. and adopted the draft of a letter to the Hon W. P.
