Mr William De Troy.

Mr William De Troy, a well-known early settler and Clerk to the Ashley Boad Board, died early this morning at Loburn, after an illness of several weeks* duration. Very distressing circumstances (surrounded hiß death, his daughter having died the previous day, and his wife being in a critical condition, her life being almost despaired of this morning. Mr De Troy was a well known figure in Christchurch in the early days. Before coming to the colony he was Principal of a college at Louth, Lincolnshire. He arrived at Lyttelton in the year 1858, and was for a short time on the Peninsula with Mr Ponßonby M. Carew, who afterwards became his son-in-law. Bemoving to Christchnrch he obtained an appointment as mathematical master at Christ's College, which position he held for cix or seven years. Betiring from it he settled down on some property he had at Avonside, but ultimately he again took up teaching as a profession under the Board of Education. In 1888 he was appointed clerk and surveyor to the Ashley Boad Board, and held the office up to the time of hia death. During his residence iv Christchurch Mr De Troy took a lively interest in publio matters. He was particularly aotive in furthering the volunteer movement, and was, we believe, a lieutenant in the No. 1 Company. He also took great interest in boating, and other pastimes of an athletic oharaoter. He was of an affable disposition, and was respected by his friends and acquaintances.
