This is in the right political key. If people traffic illegally in Maori lands, or in lands bhat have been illegally acquired by others, it is monstrous to think that the country whosa lawa have been broken in the process of acquisition should be expected to pay the cost of validating the titles to land co acquired. la strongly affirming this principle the Premier has taken a 3tand which will be heartily approved of by every disinterested man and woman in the colony." The Chairman of the Council presided at the meeting at Fairlie on Saturday, and explained that the preBent punt service was unsatisfactory ; that if the bridge were not built the punts would soon need replacing at a cost of .£6OO to X7OO, which amount would have to come out of the rates ; that if the loau were not assented to the amount must be taken from the general rates, which would necessitate a heavy increase, whereas the interest and repayment of a loan would only amount to £42 10s per annum for twenty-five years.
