( To this end our great desire is to have £ English taught our children, that their \ knowledge may be increased by reading \ English books, and that they may carry that knowledge to other islands." Eefe- t rence was also made to the London Mis- ] sionary Society sending teachers, for £ whom a honso and school are under con- c struction. , Lord Glasgow, in his reply, expressed t the interest he had always taken in the 8 welfare of the group, and assured the j people of the goodwill of the inhabitants of ] New Zealand. He would have the greatest ( pleasure in conveying to Queen Victoria £ their expressions of thankf ulneßß for the , protectorate established, and was glad to , hear from the British residents how well ] the law had been maintained by the < Government.
