NEW ZEALAND MINES.
Mr Murray's Be port.
[Per Press AssociAnoN.J WELLINGTON, Mabch 22. Mr Murray, tbe Government Geologist of Victoria, who has been engaged in inspecting New Zealand minea for some time past, has Bent in a report to the Minister of Mineß. After detailing his visita to various localities, he Bays :— " As regards future deep quartz mining in New Zealand I must confess to feeling less confident tban I would were the rocks more similar to those wherein quartz reefß have co successfully been worked to great depths in Australia; but at the same time evidences are such aa to warrant me in my recommendations with respect to fields where at present the feeling of uncertainty exists aa to the probability of success in deeper explorations." These recommendations, briefly summarised, are a3 follow ; — ! 1. Thamea goldfield— (a) Boring in the vicinity of the Queen of Beauty Bhaf t and deep sinking showed that rocks of favourable character continue downward, (b) Extension of the Moanatairi tunnel, (c) Prospecting the ground beneath the post tertiary deposits between Karaka and Hope Creeks. j 2. Reef ton field— (a) Deeper exploration and cross-cutting at Keep-it-Dark mine. (6) Extension of the Inangab.ua tunnel, (c) Deeper exploration afc the Welcome mice, Boatman's Creek, (d) Extension of | tbe Golden Lead low level tunnel near Merrijiga. j 3. Otapo fields.—- General deeper and longitudinal exploration in all proved reefs. No particular one can be said to ' demand more special attention than ' others. In many mines visited there is ' sufficient visible inducement to further j workings, and operations in that direction ' are in progress, but throughout all of them the following up of the tracks of the reefs in search of other shoots than those already known, is very advisable. ! Mr Murray concludes by commenting on the fact that no provision for reserves has ' ever been made by dividend - paying mine 3, and that consequently no funds are ! available for development except by the ' extraction of calls from the shareholders ' in tiuie3 of depression. j
